Mediation Presentation:
On April 28, 2011,
Donald Peters presented a workshop to fifty-five human resource
professionals of the constituent hotels of the Chicago Hotel
Association on the subject of mediation.
Mediation is quickly growing to be a more cost effective, more
efficient and often more effective alternative means of dispute
resolution than traditional litigation or even arbitration. However
to many it remains a somewhat mysterious process. This presentation
lifts the veil, explaining what mediation is and is not, the pros
and cons and how it works in the real world.

Webinar:
FISH OR FOWL?
EMPLOYEE OR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR?
On
July 21, 2010, Donald F. Peters, Jr. presented a webinar on the
important issue of the proper 㣬assification䠯f workers as
employees or independent contractors.
This is a subject of growing importance to all employers who
utilize service providers. The U.S. Department of Labor
estimates that 30% of employers misclassify these workers,
mostly out of ignorance.
The Obama administration recently launched a renewed enforcement
effort against employers with improperly classified workers. The
administrationⳠ2010 budget assumes that over the next ten
years, this enforcement blitz will produce at least $7 billion
in revenue from taxes and fines. Additionally, various state
agencies, such as the Illinois Department of Labor, have
indicated that they will also be stepping up enforcement and
will be sharing information with the federal government.
The webinar provides information to help employers better
understand the scope of the problem, spot issues and
vulnerabilities, and evaluate and respond to potential risks.
